Although this Sunday, the 9th, the Art in the Street show is cancelled due to the heat wave, We’ll back back on Sunday the 19th of August.

The Plaza de los Pintores is located in the heart of Madrid, right around the corner from el Mercado San Miguel.  It’s a quiet Plaza even though it’s surrounded by busy streets.

Here at the Plaza, I painted a few street scenes like this one that leads towards las cuevas de Luis Candelas.

This is calle de la Pasa which leads to the quiet little plaza.

This is the well-known Paseo del Prado with Neptune fountain in the middle of the round-about. The Retiro Park is nearby.

The Almudena Cathedral  is right next to the Royal Palace. 

There’s a heat wave in Madrid, so…tomorrow’s show is cancelled. Hope to see you next Sunday from 10-2 the 19th of August if the weather allows.

I like to start a watercolor with a light grid to keep my parallel lines parallel.  I start with a pencil sketch and then go on to pen and ink.

I tape down all of my watercolors to get the white edge of the paper.  Don’t think you need anything expensive.  I use carpenter’s tape, but it’s only there for a couple of hours.  I wouldn’t leave it there for more than a day.

This is the white edge I’m talking about.  When the tape is taken off, you have a white border.

Three Small Line & Wash Watercolors

In the spring, there are plenty of flowers to paint.  This is a line & wash.  First you draw with ink and then just lay a wash over the line leaving any white for light.

Fuente de Faunito en la Rosaleda Madrid 

Esta fuente española situada en el parque del Retiro de Madrid España se llama Fuente del Faunito. Recuerdo este día perfectamente bien. El jardín estaba lleno de rosas y había visitantes por todos lados, caminando y tomando fotos. El jardín de rosas solía estar abierto a todas horas. Solía ir temprano en la mañana cuando no había nadie alrededor. Ahora tiene una hora de apertura y una de cierre, por lo que es difícil pintar aquí ahora.

This Spanish fountain located in the Retiro park of Madrid Spain is called Fuente del Faunito.  I remember this day perfectly well.  The garden was full of roses and there were visitors everywhere, walking around and taking pictures.  The rose garden used to be open at all hours.  I used to go early in the morning when there wasn’t anybody around.  Now it has an opening and closing hour, so it’s hard to paint here now.

I love plein air painting because it’s like keeping a memory on paper.  I was at my cousin’s place and had an amazing time.

I had been to El Chorro before, but this time I came prepared to paint it.  It was a bit cloudy and was raining here and there. It was a fantastic Family reunion.

La Fuente del Fauno is the name of this classic style fountain of mythological motif. I focused on the base of the fountain so I could paint the roses with the dolphins.  I’ve read that the origin of the fountain is unknown.  Below is the painting process or sessions.

La Rosalera del Buen Retiro 2017

Madrid, is where I always wanted to paint, especially in the June light.  This fountain below, Fuente del Faunito, is one of my fountain favorites for painting.
