Arco de los Cuchilleros (Arch of the Knife makers), one of the 10 entrances to Plaza Mayor is a well known icon in Madrid located on Calle de Cuchilleros. The Arch is impressively tall due to the fact that Calle de los Cuchilleros is on a much lower street level than the other surrounding streets that access Plaza Mayor. This whole area is famous for typical Spanish archetecture and cuisine. Historically, during the 9th Century, Madrid had a moat know as Muro de Madrid (Madrid Wall) surrounding and enclosing the city, protecting it from invasions. The location of the moat corresponds to the present day boundaries of what is known as Madrid de los Austrias. On the left hand side of the cobble stone street, calle de los Cuchilleros is the area where the wall of Madrid once stood. Madrid has grown far beyond the boundaries of the medieval walls and is a present-day tourist attraction. I am bringing this little pocket painting to the Plaza de los Pintores on Sunday, the 21st of January. Hope to see you there.
Thank you for reading my little story,
